For over 30 years, Imagine has been dedicated to delivering innovative connectivity solutions across Ireland. Our investment in Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) brought high-speed broadband to thousands of rural homes and businesses when few other options existed.
Now, as Fibre Broadband becomes widely available through the National Broadband Plan—the largest telecoms project ever undertaken by the Irish State—we are embracing this next-generation technology to continue delivering the fastest, most reliable service possible.
As part of this transition, we will begin phasing out our FWA network and migrating customers to Fibre and 5G, ensuring they benefit from future-proof broadband capable of supporting all their digital needs.
⚠️ We know that with a change of this scale, things may not always go perfectly. This is a major service overhaul involving many moving parts. While we’re working hard to make it as smooth as possible, there may be bumps along the way.

Broadband Network Decommissioning – What This Means for You
As part of Imagine’s technology upgrade programme, we are retiring our legacy Fixed Wireless broadband network and transitioning customers to faster, more reliable Fibre and 5G services.
Why Is This Happening?
We are upgrading to future-ready networks to deliver:
- Faster speeds
- Improved performance
- A better overall customer experience
This means we will no longer support the existing Fixed Wireless network at your location.
What Does This Mean for Me?
You will be kept fully informed by Imagine as your current Fixed Wireless service is being discontinued.
✅ Up to 4 Months Before Service Ends
You’ll receive an information letter providing early notice of upcoming changes.
✅ Up to 3 Months Before
You’ll receive an email invitation to seamlessly switch to Fibre or 5G at the best possible conditions.
✅ Up to 60 Days Before
A notice letter with the final switch-off date and a reminder to take action.
✅ 30 Days Before
A final reminder email about the date your service will end.
Technical Information: The Decommissioning of Our Fixed Wireless Network
As part of our long-term commitment to improving broadband across Ireland, Imagine is retiring the Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.
Why Are We Decommissioning the FWA Network?
- Limited Speeds: Wireless signals from masts can be affected by distance, terrain, and weather.
- Growing Demand: Remote work, streaming, and smart home needs require more stable connections.
- National Broadband Plan (NBP): Fibre and 5G are now available across most of the country and offer superior scalability and reliability.
What Technologies Are Replacing It?
We’re transitioning customers to the following technologies based on availability:
- Fibre to the Home (FTTH) – Delivers a direct fibre optic line, supporting speeds up to 1Gbps.
- 5G Home Broadband – Uses our advanced wireless network, offering fibre-like speeds where fibre isn’t yet available.
What Happens Once You Confirm Your Upgrade?
Fibre Customers
A technician will schedule a visit to install the fibre line and set up your new modem/router.
5G Customers
In most cases, this can be self-installed. We’ll send you the equipment with step-by-step instructions. Remote support is also available.
💡 You won’t be billed for your new service until it’s fully activated.
Your old equipment (router/antenna) will be replaced. Once your new service is active:
- Your old service will be disconnected
- Billing will stop
- If equipment is to be returned, we’ll send clear instructions
Do I Need to Do Anything Technical?
No – we’ll take care of everything. You just need to:
- Schedule your install as soon as possible
- Be home on the day of the install
- Return any old equipment if requested

What if I didn’t receive a letter?
Contact our Customer Support Team at 1800 938 400 or email support@imagine.ie. We’ll confirm your account status.
What if I’m not eligible for Fibre?
We’ll offer 5G Home Broadband instead. Check your eligibility at www.imagine.ie/recontract.
What happens if I don’t switch?
Your current service will be disconnected, and your account closed. A final bill will be issued.
Will I be charged to switch?
No, switching is free. Upgrade incentives may also apply.
Can I keep my current plan?
No, you’ll need to move to a current Fibre or 5G package.
