How to Choose Broadband for a New Home in Ireland
Moving home comes with enough to organise. Broadband should not be the thing you remember after the boxes are unpacked.
Check early. Find out what’s available at the new address, whether your current service can move with you, and whether you’ll need an engineer visit. It takes 10 minutes now and saves a lot of hassle on moving day.
What Broadband Is Available at Your New Address?
The broadband available at your new home depends on the exact address. Your property may have access to fibre broadband, 5G broadband or both — with different speeds and plans available.
The quickest way to find out is to enter the full address and eircode into a broadband availability checker. This will show:
- Which connection types are available
- The estimated speed at the property
- The plans you can choose from
- Whether an engineer visit is required
- The expected installation or activation time
Check the exact property rather than relying on availability in the wider area — services can vary between nearby homes or different phases of the same estate.

Can I Transfer My Broadband to a New Home?
Possibly — but it depends on whether your current provider serves the new address.
Contact your provider before moving and ask:
- Is my current service available at the new address?
- Can I keep the same plan and price?
- Will I need new equipment?
- Is there a transfer or installation charge?
- Will a new contract begin?
- What happens if the service is not available?
Even when your provider covers the new address, the connection type may be different — your new home may have fibre available instead of 5G, or the other way around.
Don’t cancel your existing service until the new one is confirmed and dated. One without the other is how people end up working off a phone hotspot for two weeks.
If your current provider is not available at the new address, or you’re considering a change, read our guide to switching broadband in Ireland before choosing your next provider.
Can I Order Broadband Before I Move In?
Yes — and it’s worth doing as early as possible, especially if you work from home or need a connection from day one.
You can usually start arranging broadband once you know the address, eircode and the date you’ll receive the keys. You may need to arrange:
- Access for an engineer
- Permission from a landlord or management company
- A suitable installation date
- Access to shared areas in an apartment building
- A location for the router or other equipment
For a new-build home, check with the developer or estate agent that the address and eircode are fully registered before trying to book installation.
How Much Broadband Speed Will My New Home Need?
Your broadband needs may change when you move. Think about:
- How many people live in the home
- How many devices will be connected
- Whether anyone works or studies from home
- How often you stream or play online games
- The size and layout of the property
- The Wi-Fi equipment included with the package
| Household use | Suggested speed |
| Browsing, email and light streaming | 50 Mbps+ |
| HD streaming, video calls and everyday use | 100 Mbps+ |
| Several users working, studying or streaming at once | 300 Mbps+ |
| Gaming, 4K streaming and a busy household | 500 Mbps+ |
| Large households with many connected devices | 500 Mbps–1 Gbps |
Don’t just look at the headline monthly price. Check the full cost, what equipment is included, and whether the price is fixed or changes after a promotional period.
Imagine plans include unlimited data and a WiFi 7 router. The price is frozen until December 2030 — what you pay on day one is what you’ll pay in 2030. No surprises.
