Fibre vs 5G Broadband in Ireland: Which Is Right for You?

Fibre vs 5G Broadband in Ireland: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing home broadband used to be fairly straightforward. Today, households can connect in several ways, from Full Fibre to 5G, fixed wireless and satellite.

The right option depends less on where you think you should get your broadband and more on what is actually available at your address.

For homes with Full Fibre available, it can offer very high speeds and plenty of capacity for busy households. Where Fibre has not yet reached the property, a strong 5G connection can provide fast home broadband without relying on a fibre cable into the house.

So how do Fibre and 5G actually compare?

What Internet Options Are Available in Ireland?

Homes in Ireland can connect to broadband through several technologies.

The main options include:

  • Full Fibre broadband: Fibre-optic cable runs directly to the home.
  • 5G broadband: Uses a 5G wireless network to connect the home through a router.
  • Part Fibre broadband: Fibre reaches a local cabinet, with the final connection using copper.
  • Fixed wireless broadband: Uses radio signals between the home and a nearby mast.
  • Satellite broadband: Connects through a satellite dish and can serve locations where other options are limited.
  • Cable broadband: Uses a combination of fibre and coaxial cable.

What you can actually choose depends on the infrastructure and coverage at your address. Some homes have several options, while others may only have one or two.

For Imagine customers, the two main home broadband options are Full Fibre and 5G.

What Is Fibre Broadband?

Full Fibre, also known as Fibre to the Home or FTTH, uses fibre-optic cable all the way to the property.

That makes it well suited to homes that regularly have several people online at the same time.

Fibre can make sense if your household:

  • Streams on several TVs
  • Games online
  • Works or studies from home
  • Regularly downloads large files
  • Has lots of connected devices
  • Needs consistently high capacity

Imagine currently offers Full Fibre plans with speeds of up to 500 Mbps, 1,000 Mbps and 2,000 Mbps, depending on availability at the address.

The important part is that Fibre needs the right physical network infrastructure to reach your home. If that network has not reached your address yet, you will need to consider another connection type.

What Is 5G Home Broadband?

5G home broadband connects your house wirelessly rather than bringing a fibre cable directly into the property.

A 5G router receives the network signal and creates Wi-Fi inside the home.

That can make 5G useful when:

  • Fibre is not available
  • You want broadband without relying on an older copper connection
  • You live outside a major urban area
  • You need a connection that can be set up relatively quickly
  • Your address has strong 5G coverage

Imagine currently offers 5G home broadband at speeds of up to 300 Mbps or 450 Mbps, depending on the plan and service available at your address.

Unlike Fibre, 5G performance can be affected by network demand, signal quality, location and other conditions.

Fibre vs 5G Broadband: What Is the Difference?

Both can provide fast home broadband, but they reach your house differently.

 Fibre broadband 5G broadband
Connection Fibre-optic cable to the home Wireless 5G network
Imagine speeds Up to 2,000 Mbps Up to 450 Mbps
Installation Requires Fibre infrastructure and installation Can be self-installed on some plans
Capacity Strong option for very busy households Suitable for everyday use and busy homes depending on the plan
Performance Generally more consistent for sustained heavy use Can vary with signal and network conditions
Availability Depends on Fibre network reaching the address Depends on 5G coverage at the address
Data / Fair Usage Policy Genuinely unlimited data Fair Usage Policy applies; Unlimited 5G has a 1 TB FUP

Neither option is automatically right for every home.

Start with availability, then think about what your household actually does online.

Is Fibre Better Than 5G Broadband?

Fibre generally has the advantage when you need the highest speeds and consistently high capacity.

It may be the better fit for a home where several people regularly:

  • Stream in 4K
  • Game online
  • Join video calls
  • Upload large files
  • Work from home
  • Use many devices at once

But choosing Fibre only makes sense if it is available at the property and the extra capacity is useful to your household.

If your household mainly streams, browses, works online and uses a normal number of connected devices, a strong 5G connection may already provide the performance you need.

Is 5G Broadband Good for Rural Areas?

It can be.

Rural broadband has historically been more limited because running physical infrastructure to every property takes time.

Wireless technologies such as 5G and fixed wireless can provide another way to connect homes where Fibre has not yet reached the address. Fibre rollout is continuing across Ireland, including rural areas, but availability still varies from property to property.

That makes an availability check particularly important in rural areas.

Do not assume you cannot get Fibre because you live outside a town. Equally, do not assume 5G will be available simply because your phone receives a mobile signal.

Check the exact property.

What Is the Best Internet Option in an Urban Area?

Urban and suburban homes often have more broadband infrastructure available, which can mean more choice.

If Full Fibre reaches the property and you have a busy household, it can be a strong long-term option because of the speeds and capacity available.

But that does not mean every urban household automatically needs the fastest Fibre package.

If one or two people mainly browse, stream and make video calls, a 5G plan may provide enough capacity where coverage is strong.

Think about:

  • How many people live in the home
  • How many devices are connected
  • Whether you game
  • How much 4K streaming you do
  • Whether anyone works from home
  • How often you download or upload large files

The best connection is the one that matches the way the household actually uses the internet.

How Do I Check What Internet Is Available at My Address?

Use your eircode.

Imagine's availability checker shows whether Fibre or 5G broadband is available at your home and which plans you can choose.

Check what broadband is available at your address →

Once you know your options, compare:

  • Available speed
  • Number of people and devices
  • Data allowance
  • Installation
  • Wi-Fi needs
  • Monthly price
  • Contract terms

Do not choose on maximum speed alone.

Fibre or 5G: Which Should You Choose?

Choose Fibre when: it is available and your household needs high speeds, lots of capacity or supports many heavy users.

Consider 5G when: you have good 5G coverage, Fibre is unavailable or your household does not need the very highest Fibre speeds.

There is no need to decide before checking your address.

Imagine currently offers Fibre and 5G broadband, with the option shown to you based on what is available at your eircode. Imagine broadband plans also have their standard price frozen until December 2030.

A Service Wrap-Up Charge applies if you leave within the first 24 months.

Popular FAQs

Fibre can currently offer higher maximum home broadband speeds. Imagine’s Full Fibre plans reach up to 2,000 Mbps, while its current 5G plans reach up to 450 Mbps. Actual speeds depend on the service, location, network and equipment.

For many households, 5G can provide enough speed for streaming, browsing, video calls and everyday home use. Homes with very heavy usage, lots of devices or frequent large downloads may benefit more from Fibre where it is available.

Yes, a strong and stable 5G connection can support working from home, including video calls and cloud software. The experience depends on coverage, network conditions and how many people share the connection.

Possibly. Fibre availability is based on the network at your exact address rather than simply whether you live in an urban or rural area. Use an eircode availability checker before assuming Fibre is unavailable.

Broadband availability varies by property. Enter your eircode into Imagine’s broadband availability checker to see whether Fibre or 5G broadband is currently available at your home.

Not necessarily. The right speed depends on the number of users, connected devices and what your household does online. A smaller household may not benefit from the same speed as a home with several gamers, remote workers and 4K streams running at once.
